Rīgas satiksme to start reconstruction of tracks and overpasses at the intersection of 11. novembra krastmala and 13. janvāra iela

At the end of February, Rīgas satiksme will start construction works at the intersection of 11. novembra krastmala and 13. janvāra iela. The construction project involves the reconstruction of the tram infrastructure, i.e. the tracks and the tram catenary, at the intersection of 11. novembra krastmala and 13. janvāra iela. The construction area consists of a six-track crossing with six switches, all of which will be replaced by automatic ones.

Underground utilities such as storm water drainage and communication networks will also be replaced in the area prior to the track reconstruction. The construction of the track structure will start in sequence. At the intersection with the city streets, the rails will be constructed on a reinforced concrete slab structure, which will not only increase the durability of the laid surface and the wear resistance of the rails at high traffic volumes (including heavy vehicles such as buses, trolleybuses, etc.) and reduce maintenance costs during operation, but will also reduce the crossing time for vehicles, thus improving the permeability of the intersection. To reduce vibration and noise during tram operation, the rails will be glued to the slabs with a special noise and vibration damping and electrical insulating material.

During the construction works, trams will not be stopped, but will be diverted to take the adjacent tram tracks for detours. The works are planned to be organised in four phases.  The public will be informed separately about the details of the traffic organisation during all phases of the works.

The contract for the construction works at the intersection of 11. novembra krastmala and 13. janvāra iela was signed at the end of 2022, as a result of the procurement, the offer from road construction company Binders SIA, which will also carry out the construction works, was recognised as the most economically advantageous.

The construction works are scheduled to be completed in autumn 2023.

The construction works at the intersection of 11. novembra krastmala and 13. janvāra iela are co-financed by the European Union Cohesion Fund within the framework of Project No. 4.5.1.1/22/I/001 "Adaptation of Riga Tram Infrastructure to Low Floor Tram Parameters" (hereinafter–- the Project). In addition to the reconstruction of the intersection, the Project also plans to adapt the infrastructure of tram line Route No. 7 in the section from Centrāltirgus iela to the Ķengarags terminus and the infrastructure of tram line Route No. 5 in the section from the intersection of Jūrmalas gatve and Slokas iela to the Iļģuciems terminus to the low floor tram parameters. The Project also includes the renewal of four substations and the construction of one substation, all equipped with electrical equipment to ensure adequate power supply for the low floor tram operation. The total cost of the Project is estimated at EUR 55.2 million, while the Cohesion Fund co-financing amounts to 85% of the eligible costs, i.e. EUR 38.78 million.
